Worship service in the sanctuary returns to 11 a.m. Make a note so you won't be early to the sanctuary. I encourage everyone to join our morning Sunday school classes. Christian Diversity Sunday School Class Offered for Adults, Fall 2017

Beginning September 10, 2017, the pastor is going to be offering up an adult Sunday school class studying and looking to implement Christian diversity among us. We begin with seven weeks of engaging exercises covering 1. Answering God’s Call; 2. Prejudices, Perceptions, and Assumptions; 3. Comfort Zones and Going Beyond Them; 4. Leadership in a Time or Place of Transition; 5. Open Heart, Open Hand, Let Go; 6. Walk Like Jesus Walked; and 7. To Be a Good Neighbor. From there, we will plunge into a study of a terrific book, Welcoming Community: Diversity that Works. This is a start to a journey of understanding of all the diverse people God has gifted us with, within our church walls, out in our community, and throughout our American Baptist denomination.

This is a study I hope everyone will take advantage of and add their unique experience and perspective to in the months ahead as this impacts everyone, without exception. Rev. Doug Avilesbernal compares and contrasts society’s understanding of diversity with our understanding of Christian diversity. This is useful in clearing up confusion. As Rev. Avilesbernal observes, our culture understands diversity as being merely tolerant of others, and today that is exactly where most diversity training programs will leave you. This approach allows people of different backgrounds (ethnic, national, regional, however one chooses to divide humanity) to move toward one another without actively disliking each other, but only to the point of tolerating each other. While tolerance is a good thing, as far as it goes, it only allows us to stay out of each other’s way. That’s not what Christ had in mind for us, and certainly not how he approached other people.

Christian diversity, by contrast, is more complicated. Christian diversity welcomes different people because it is instead rooted in Jesus’ command that we love one another as ourselves. This is an approach that allows our church community to welcome and integrate differences into our community and enjoy the riches that such inclusion bring, riches that are blessings flowing from God and through others. It is a wonderful thing to strive for and a challenging thing to achieve. Churches that make the attempt and succeed are far stronger, far more joyful, and far greater blessed.

Sunday, September 18, Worship Outdoors at 11 a.m.

This Sunday, September 18, 2016, the worship hour returns to 11 a.m. To kick off the fall season, we will be worshiping outside on our grounds by the education wing, near the intersection of Lansdowne and East LaCrosse avenues. Our pianist, Doug Yadevia, has come up with a full, portable, electric piano to accompany our hymn singing. The hymns themselves will be familiar and inviting ones. The sermon will speak to us about prayer that God finds "right and acceptable." The sermon is based on 1 Timothy 2:1-7.

Come out and join us in our joy, worshiping our wonderful God.* Bring a friend along to enjoy this outdoor worship experience. All are welcome!

*Our Sunday school classes for children and adults will begin the following week, September 25, at 9:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us for Sunday school as well!

Sunday September 18 Return to 11 a.m. Worship

Check your schedules and make a note. Lansdowne Baptist Church will be slightly delaying our return to our 11 a.m. worship schedule as we leave the summer behind. The change will not occur Labor Day weekend (as you see listed in the sidebar for this page). Instead, for several reasons, we will return to our 11 a.m. worship schedule on Sunday, September 18th. On that grand Sunday morning, our Sunday school classes will kick off their new fall season as well. We look forward to seeing you all there. Bring you family and friends.

As long as the weather cooperates, we will hold that first Sunday service returning to our 11 o'clock hour out on the lawn. It will be a special service for us. If you find yourself in the neighborhood and see us worshiping there on the LBC lawn, feel free to join us. You will be most welcome!

Sunday Services for January 24, 2016, Cancelled

Given the blizzard conditions of Saturday and Saturday night, January 23rd, all services at Lansdowne Baptist are cancelled for Sunday, January 24th. Please stay safe and warm in this blizzard. We look forward to seeing you and worshiping together again on Sunday, January 31st, in both Sunday School (9:45 a.m.) and church (11:00 a.m.).

Also, as a reminder, we are asking all members to attend the annual business meeting to be held next Sunday, January 31st at 12:15 p.m., after worship (see: for details).

While worshiping God individually this Sunday instead of corporately, if you feel the need for a sermon this Sunday to help you worship at home, check out the many sermons that are available for you right here.

Your pastor is praying for you.

Simple Chalk Sign and Children

Our Lansdowne Baptist Church chalk sign is moving into a new era. We have turned over some of the sidewalk chalk to the children's Sunday school classes. They are adding enhancements to our messages that make them stand out even more. It is a wonderful thing when you turn over an idea to a group of creative young people and their teachers. You never know what will happen. It is great to see them explore their God-given gifts. I look forward to seeing future artwork from our young people, and perhaps some messages in time. Keep your eyes open as you drive past. Of course, as always, you are more than welcome to join us on Sunday morning as well. We would love to have you share our joy as we worship together.

Have a blessed day!

End of School Year Bash a Community Success!

The Sunday School teachers have done it again! Lansdowne Baptist Church put on an end of the school year bash for the children of the church and the community. Children of all ages enjoyed the antics of Joyful Noise the Christian clown, who billed himself as the Ringleader of the Ridiculous for the Almighty; Court Jester for Jesus; and the Minion of Mirth for the Holy Spirit. He put on a "spirited" performance that kept everyone entertained and involved.

Also featured were a "Bouncy Castle" irresistible to all children ... and a few adults when no one was looking. Games of musical chairs, water balloon toss, and pinata kept up the activity level throughout.

Of course, wonderful food was available for everyone. Nobody left hungry.

The activities ran from 11 AM until 2 PM and we were all sorry to see it end. A wonderful time was had by all and LBC members and the pastor had some wonderful conversations with members of the community. The pastor's wife and daughter went down to the local music store about a block away and were asked what LBC was up to. More than one person observed "There always seems to be something happening at LBC." We hope so. We are working hard to be about God's business in our community. It was truly joyful business on this beautiful day God gave us.

Hope to see you at next year's bash! You'll be welcome, warmly greeted, fed (physically and spiritually), and sent away with a smile.

New Members Classes to be Offered in May 2014

A series of four new membership classes will be offered to all who have become members of Lansdowne Baptist Church within the last year to year and a half by the pastor. Each class will be an hour long. These classes will be offered in the month of May. Sign-up sheets will be provided for all who are interested in attending. A second sign-up sheet will be provided for sponsors. Sponsors are long-term members of the congregation who would like to partner with new members, take the classes with them, offer to spend a little time outside class getting to know the new members and answering any questions that may have arisen in class. On the last Sunday in May, sponsors will be asked to introduce their member to the congregation as a whole. Classes will cover the basics of the Baptist faith and provide some history of Lansdowne Baptist Church. Class time is tentatively set for the Sunday school hour, unless participants would prefer another meeting time.
