Sunday sermon following Earth Day, based on Genesis 2:15 & Leviticus 19:9-10. We look at the creation story to see what is intended in our relationship between God and humanity. Leviticus helps us with our relations between each other. The menorah was lit in solidarity with the synagogue congregants in San Diego who were attacked, and with all who have suffered violence in their sacred spaces. Watch and see what is to be discovered through this riveting tale.

More than enough food, much to choose from. |
It was wonderful to see this small community come together and fellowship in harmony in such a divided society. It was inspiring and makes me hopeful that we can all come together around worthy projects, setting aside our differences to work on something that benefits everyone.

Beyond Loaves and Fishes: Judges: Week 2
Tonight we plunged into the book of Judges seriously. The book is designed to challenge safe assumptions and present us with alternative ideas. Come and watch!
Personal note: It is always tricky to make off the cuff remarks at the start. I know full well it was Notre Dame Cathedral that burned ... but I said the Louvre ... based on something I'd read earlier and was rattling around in my head. I will confess my first inclination was not to share this live stream or to edit that embarrassing slip away ... but, being an admittedly fallible human being as well as a pastor, you might as well see the mistakes and know I'm going to make more as we go along. Let's hear it for transparency.
We'll all need to give each other grace instead of judgment, especially in challenging times like these. Honestly, I'm still in emotional turmoil over the Notre Dame Cathedral fire and the arson committed against three African-American churches. I'm also entirely sure I mispronounced the names of some of the many tribes resident in the land. The first two chapters were some pretty interesting reads. Just wait until we get to chapter 3!

The Stones Would Shout
The Palm Sunday sermon for April 14, 2019, based on Luke 19:28-40, with Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Here we explore what the people of Israel expected in a Messiah, how Jesus understood his role as Messiah (which was radically different), and what that means for us today. See what Jesus meant when he told the Pharisees if these people didn't proclaim his coming, the stones would shout. Come and watch

Beyond Loaves and Fishes: Ruth Week 6 & Judges Week 1
Tuesday night, April 9, 2019, we wrapped up our study of the book of Ruth and moved on to the book of Judges. This is a real challenge as Judges deals with a time of turmoil for Israel, when the nation is edging toward monarchy. It is written for Israelites in exile to offer them hope as well, looking back at where they had been for explanation of how they arrived at where they are. It challenges a lot of comfy assumptions with challenging questions. Come and watch!

What Price?
Our sermon today was based on John 12:1-8. We explore how generous Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus, was in her anointing of Jesus. We explore how we may be equally generous with others, and why we should do so. Come and watch.

Beyond Loaves and Fishes: Lenten Live Stream Week 4
On Thursday night, April 4, 2019, we wrapped up our study from N.T. Wright's book, The Day the Revolution Began. We discovered Jesus' vocation, how that vocation was lived out in his crucifixion, and how it has been passed along to us today. We examined what this means for us. We were given a lot to ponder and a lot to do. Come and watch. See if you aren't encouraged to do a few things differently yourself. Have a blessed seaons of Lent and Easter.

Promises Kept
The sermon for Sunday, March 31, 2019, is based on Joshua 5:9-12. In this text the people of Israel, facing exile in Babylon, are reminded of a time when they were faithful to God, followed God's law, and were bold and courageous. It was an inspirational message designed to turn the faithful toward God and the hope of an eventual return from exile. It may be equally inspirational for us today. Come and watch!
It looks like we had a momentary hiccup with the recorder toward the end of the sermon. Sorry about that.
Easter Egg Hunt!

Lansdowne Baptist Church will hold an Easter Egg Hunt for the young children (first grade and below) on Saturday, April 13, from 1:30 p.m. until the last Easter egg is recovered (no later than 2:30 p.m.)! We will be gathering and hunting on the grass outside the office wing near our parking lot. This hunt is open to children from the community and we look forward to seeing you there. Happy hunting.
May the blessings of Easter be yours!
Racism and the Church
Lansdowne Baptist Church is proud to be a diverse, multi-cultural church. That alone doesn't guarantee racial harmony, but it provides firsthand insight, and communication between members of different races. Segregated churches do not have the benefit of that particular social interaction. Some even experience the perils of "single-mindedness" which can foster deeply embedded and pervasive structures of racism, and in extreme cases, lead to horrible hateful acts of violence. The many intricate levels of racism are hard to combat, even when it is a recognized problem, with people willing to address it. See the article at: https://baptistnews.com/article/beyond-condemning- racist-violence-the-white- church-must-grapple-with-ways- it-is-implicated-in-that- violence/#.XJ6cDphKiUk
